How to protect a book from falling apart?

I have a pretty thick paperback textbook, and there seem to be a lot of stress on the spine of the book when I open the book up. Is there a way to “reinforce” it?

Some of my older books are reinforced with silk bandage tape along the spine. It looks terrible, but seems to work okay.
