In Patricia Cornwells Scarpetta Books, How Does Benton get killed in Point of Origin, then is suddenly alive?

Ive read alot of her books, alot of times out of order but keep in mind who should be alive and who shouldnt. She kills Bentons character in Point of Origin then In her later book, Trace, he’s alive again. I have researched the order the were written and it appears that Trace was written after Point of Origin. Im really confused now. Unless I havent read a book that brings him back for some reason or mistake of identity I dont understand. Can anyone help me figure this out? What am I missing?

His death was faked, but I can’t remember why. Something to do with his job.
