What are Jane Austen’s best three novels other than Pride and Prejudice?
I think that Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen’s best novel. I want to compare two other Austen novels with P&P. What are, in your opinion, two other great Austen books?
As you can see, it really -is- a matter of opinion and probably no two people would have the exact same take on the placement or rank of Jane Austen’s novels. I’ll give you my arrangement, in order of preference – Pride and Prejudice being my favorite.
2. Persuasion – the most romantic of her novels, eldest heroine
3. Sense and Sensibility – comparable to Pride and Prejudice in the sister aspect, less humorous
4. Emma – comparable to Pride and Prejudice in the humor, only after Sense and Sensibility because I found Emma annoying at times
5. Northanger Abbey – the most naive and youngest heroine, brilliant satire of the Gothic romances popular in Jane Austen’s day
6. Mansfield Park – well written, interesting story, but more somber than the others & the main character is a bit insipid
Then there is Lady Susan, an epistolary novel (perhaps novella) and her unfinished Sanditon and also The Watsons, plus her juvenilia (stories written when very young). They are all interesting, but not on the same level with her six major novels.
As far as comparison’s sake, I’d say the romance in Persuasion could be compared to the romance in Pride and Prejudice, the sisters in Sense and Sensibility to the sisters in P&P and the humor and quirky characters in Emma to the same in P&P.
