Fritz Leiber Autographs

Surprisingly, Fritz Leiber autographs are few and far between.  A prolific writer of science fiction and fantasy, most of Leiber’s autographs are found on his books; rarely on letters or documents.  Occasionally, a check from a publisher that has ben endorsed by Leiber appears on the autograph market.  Leiber received royalty checks from the makers of  “Dungeons and Dragons” to sustain his senior years.  These checks are prized by collectors because of their association with characters depicted in Leiber’s fantastic fantasy series “Fafrd and the Gray Mouser.”  Occasionally, a check reprint from his personal account that displays his interesting autograph is offered on the Internet. 

Fritz Leiber autographs of the science fiction author should be distinguished from Fritz Lieber autographs from his father of the same name.  The senior Fritz Leiber lived from 1882 to 1949 and was renown as a Shakespearian actor who also directed and produced numerous plays.  Fritz Leiber the author was born in 1910 and passed away in 1992.  Autographs from the senior Fritz Leiber usually originate from the east coast.  Fritz Leiber the author lived in Chicago and Los Angeles for much of his life.  He spent his senior years living in a simple apartment on Geary Street in San Francisco, California. 

Autographs from Fritz Leiber can be found among the many books that he authored.  Leiber signed many trade copies of his hardback and softcover books at science fiction conventions and trade shows.   Autograph collectors have a high assurance of authenticity when acquiring limited editions of his books with his signature.  The hardcover version of “The Ghost Story” was published in 1984 as a limited edition of 350 signed and numbered copies.  In 1990, the comprehensive “The Leiber Chronicles” was published with 52 signed lettered copies.  In 1990, Leiber also signed 500 copies of “As Green as an Emeraude”, a collection of poetry written by his wife Margo Skinner.  Leiber’s signed books are coveted by autograph collectors and science fiction buffs. 

Most of Leiber’s papers were donated to the University of Houston in Texas.  The collection houses a vast array of Leiber’s autographed memorabilia including manuscripts, cancelled checks, literary agreements, and artwork.  As a result, Fritz Leiber autographs have been preserved for researchers and other biographers. 

Leiber died in September 1992, just a few weeks after attending a science fiction convention with his wife Margo Skinner in London, Ontario, Canada.  Fritz Leiber autographs from his last public appearance have nostalgic appeal.

Fritz Leiber was recognized as a brilliant writer during his long and prolific career.  As time passes his creative genius has continued to endure and embrace new generations of fans.  Fritz Leiber autographs are prized mementos that will be collected for many years to come.
